A Colorado man en route with his wife to a Reno bowling tournament hit the big time after winning $10.4 million on a progressive Megabucks MegaJackpot at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.
On February 21st, John Johnson was in town to attend the U.S. Bowling Congress Open Championships, and as he explains: “Three years ago, I married my wife, Stephanie, here in Reno. All of us use the Open as a vacation every year, and we just come out to have a good time. Plus, bowling is a big part of my life. It’s really the best of everything.”
Johnson said he was first attracted to the airport slot machine after stepping off the escalator, and with a few minutes to kill decided to put $20 into the machine and test his luck. His wife and two bowling friends watched while Johnson won $6 on his third spin and on the fifth go he asked his wife if she wanted to push the button. After she turned down his offer, he replied, “OK, but you better find the attendant because I’m gonna win something really big.”
However, little could the 36-year-old mechanical engineer suspect his optimistic words of bravado were about to ring true beyond his wildest dreams as the progressive jackpot wheels rolled into alignment. As he explained:
“We looked at each other like, ‘What just happened?’ because the machine wasn’t making any noise. At first, I thought we won $10,000, which is a huge amount of money…I kept telling my wife that something was going to go well this week, whether it was bowling well or winning something, but I never could have imagined winning $10 million.”
Despite his incredible win of $10,422,754.08 on the Megabucks MegaJackpot, Johnson has no intentions of changing his life any time soon and continued on his journey to the Reno’s National Bowling Stadium, where he bowled alongside his Kamikaze Keglers buddies. He said:
“I told my wife and everybody else that I’m just trying to continue on with our vacation and act like nothing’s happened because it just doesn’t feel real yet.”
The Johnson’s said they intend to continue with their jobs, with wife Stephanie commenting, “Not having anything to do all day just seems absurd. We like structure.” They said they would use the money to look after their family, which includes two toddlers.
